Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has completed the installation of the City’s first-ever outdoor fitness court in Rotary Park. The fitness court features 28 outdoor grade fitness stations, complete with poured-in-place rubber surfacing, ensuring a safe and comfortable workout experience to fill community demand for increased fitness and wellness opportunities.

“Staying active is so important for our overall well-being—both physically and mentally,” Mayor Paul TenHaken said. My goal is to see Sioux Falls as the ‘healthiest city in America,’ and we can only do that if we have the tools and resources readily available for our community. This fitness court provides a gathering space that encourages residents to spend time outside and exercise. I look forward to seeing this space thrive and evaluating the potential of adding more throughout the city.”

To help residents make the most of the new addition, Parks and Recreation is partnering with AARP Sioux Falls to conduct a series of instructional programs throughout the summer. Participants can learn how to use the equipment effectively during the following scheduled sessions:

  • Monday, June 26, at 9:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, June 28, at 10 a.m.
  • Friday, July 7, at 12 noon
  • Monday, July 24 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, August 2, at 9:30 a.m.
  • Friday, August 18, at 12 noon
  • Monday, August 21 at 12 noon
The fitness court at Rotary Park will offer a wide range of fitness options available to the public at no cost. These offerings include exercise bikes, an arm-pedal bike, a cross trainer machine, box jump stations, push-up bars, pull-up bars, climbers/monkey bars, kettlebell stations, sit up/abdominal benches, speed ladders, and agility stations. With this diverse selection of equipment, individuals of all fitness levels can engage in effective and enjoyable workouts. Additionally, KOMPAN has developed a free phone app that provides detailed instructions on how to use the equipment, as well as the ability to generate and track individual workouts.

“Residents of Sioux Falls have consistently ranked adult fitness and wellness as a top priority, as confirmed by our 2020 citizen survey results,” Tory Miedema, Park Development Specialist, said. “Youth fitness and wellness programs have also been highly sought after. We actively listen to the needs of the residents and invest accordingly in our parks system. Additionally, the Mayor has been a strong advocate for fitness initiatives for people of all ages and has played a pivotal role in championing this project.”
