United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange of the U.S. District Court has sentenced a White River, South Dakota man for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. The sentencing occurred on June 10, 2024.
Nathan First In Trouble, age 45, received a sentence of 13 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
First In Trouble was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2023 and pleaded guilty on March 21, 2024. His previous convictions include Sexual Contact With a Person Incapable of Consenting in Mellette County, South Dakota on December 12, 1995, and Sexual Abuse of a Minor in U.S. District Court in Aberdeen, South Dakota on April 13, 1998. These convictions required him to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) and South Dakota law. He failed to update his registration between July 29, 2022, and December 12, 2023.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood coordinates federal, state, and local resources to apprehend individuals who exploit children and rescue victims.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.
First In Trouble was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
