United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier has sentenced four individuals involved in a drug distribution and money laundering conspiracy. Nathan Johnson, Michele Johnson, Jesse Richmond, and Tony Hunter were convicted of conspiracy charges related to distributing controlled substances and laundering money.
Nathan Johnson, 39, from Denver, Colorado, received a sentence of 36 years and eight months in federal prison after pleading guilty on June 17, 2024. Michele Johnson, 48, from Steen, Minnesota, was sentenced to 31 years and eight months following her guilty plea on July 29, 2024. Jesse Richmond, 51, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, pleaded guilty on June 18, 2024 and was sentenced to 24 years and four months. Tony Hunter also from Sioux Falls was sentenced to 27 years after his plea on May 29.
The defendants were indicted by a federal grand jury in August of last year with additional charges filed against them in May of this year including another defendant Alfred Siani.
The case involved the transportation of methamphetamine from California to South Dakota between December of last year through July this year. Nathan Johnson led the operation acquiring approximately 150 pounds of methamphetamine for distribution across Denver as well as South Dakota.
The conspiracy saw over $450000 laundered during its course while involving more than three hundred pounds worth of methamphetamine being distributed within these regions by co-conspirators including Richmond Hunter alongside Michele Johnson.
“These multi-decade sentences illustrate the seriousness," said United States Attorney Ramsdell adding "We are grateful for collaboration among various law enforcement agencies which resulted in dismantling this network."
Special Agent Steve Bell remarked “These sentences should serve as wake-up calls,” noting that collectively they face up-to-one-hundred-nineteen-years imprisonment providing time reflecting upon inflicted damages caused throughout lives affected due their actions."
This investigation included participation from numerous agencies such as Drug Enforcement Administration FBI among others who assisted bringing about successful prosecution handled by Assistant U.S Attorney Paige Petersen
All convicted parties have been remanded into custody under supervision provided via United States Marshals Service authority ensuring compliance regarding terms set forth during sentencing hearings conducted recently concluded session overseen directly presiding judge responsible issuing respective judgments rendered therein accordance applicable statutes governing relevant legal framework underpinning adjudication processes employed throughout entirety proceedings culminating final disposition reached herein subject matter addressed fully comprehensively resolved thereby effectively concluding related litigation efforts initiated previously commenced earlier stages initial filing period pertaining circumstances surrounding facts presented evidence submitted trial phase completed
