U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson from South Dakota has cast his vote in favor of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The legislation aims to ensure that any infant who survives an abortion attempt receives necessary medical care.
“There should be no doubt that a child born after a failed abortion attempt is a living person,” Johnson stated. “This bill will ensure babies who survive an attempt to end their life will receive the care they need. Every child deserves a chance at life.”
Johnson has recently received an A+ rating on the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life Scorecard, which evaluates his voting record and actions during the 118th Congress.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act mandates that healthcare professionals present at the live birth must provide the same level of care as they would to any other prematurely born child of similar gestational age. Following these efforts, it requires healthcare workers to transport and admit the infant to a hospital.
Additionally, the act obliges healthcare practitioners and hospital staff to report violations to law enforcement, aiming to decrease unreported cases of infants surviving abortions. It also imposes penalties for intentionally ending the life of a born-alive infant, including fines or imprisonment for up to five years.
The act further provides legal recourse for mothers of abortion survivors against those performing abortions and offers them protection from prosecution, highlighting women's role as secondary victims in such situations while emphasizing motherhood's dignity.
