U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson has reintroduced the Keep the Nine constitutional amendment, which seeks to maintain the number of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court at nine. This move comes amid discussions from some quarters about increasing the number of justices, a concept often referred to as "court packing."
Johnson stated, "Calls from the left to ‘pack the court’ are radical attempts to gain a political advantage." He emphasized that his motivation for introducing this amendment each Congress is to protect what he sees as the integrity of the Supreme Court.
Casey Mattox, Senior Advisor to Americans for Prosperity, expressed support for Johnson's proposal. "Court packing will only create a politicized judiciary with judges chosen solely to accomplish specific political results," Mattox said. He further commended Representative Johnson and House Republicans for their efforts in advancing this proposal.
Paul Summers, Chair of The Keep Nine Coalition and former Attorney General of Tennessee, also voiced his endorsement: "The Keep Nine Amendment is critical to the preservation of an independent Supreme Court that protects the rule of law and every one of our Constitutional rights."
Additionally, Julie Harris, President of National Federation of Republican Women, affirmed her organization's backing: "The National Federation of Republican Women strongly endorses the Keep Nine Amendment to safeguard our Supreme Court."
The resolution currently has 72 cosponsors in the House.
