U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson of South Dakota cast his vote in favor of the House budget resolution, marking the beginning of the reconciliation process for the House. The resolution aims to implement significant spending cuts and enhance various sectors.
"Insolvency cannot be an option," stated Johnson. "I refuse to stand idly by while our government spends its way into oblivion. Cuts must be made to end systemic waste, fraud, and abuse. Now is the time to put America on the right path."
The bill's provisions include enhancing border security, maintaining current tax rates and child tax credits, promoting American energy independence, and identifying specific areas for spending reductions.
House Concurrent Resolution 14 outlines a requirement for at least $1.5 trillion in mandatory savings over a decade and allocates up to $300 billion for border security and defense initiatives. Additionally, it provides $4.5 trillion for the Ways and Means Committee to maintain existing tax rates.
According to data from the Budget Committee, if the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expires, taxpayers could face significant financial impacts: average taxpayers would experience a 22% tax increase; 40 million families might see their Child Tax Credit halved; 91% of all taxpayers could have their guaranteed deduction reduced by half; two million family-owned farms may see their Death Tax Exemption cut in half; 26 million small businesses might face a top tax rate increase of 43.4%; six million jobs could be lost; and a family of four earning $80,610 annually might encounter a $1,695 tax hike.
