United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler has sentenced a man from Rapid City, South Dakota, for the offense of Failure to Appear After Release. The sentencing occurred on July 21, 2025.

Rayzohn Bertrand, aged 24, received a sentence of two years and six months in federal prison. Following his prison term, he will be under supervised release for three years and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

In March 2025, Bertrand was indicted by a federal grand jury for Failure to Appear After Release and entered a guilty plea on May 12, 2025.

Previously convicted for being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Bertrand was required to follow conditions of supervised release as part of his sentence. He allegedly violated these conditions upon release and was arrested for revocation proceedings. A United States Magistrate Judge released him from custody pending his hearing with instructions to attend all court proceedings. Bertrand failed to appear at his revocation hearing, violating federal law.

On July 21, 2025, Bertrand admitted to violating his supervised release conditions and received an additional six-month sentence in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. This new sentence is set to run consecutively with the earlier 30-month sentence.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the Summerset Police Department conducted the investigation into this case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder.

Bertrand has been placed into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately following his sentencing.
