A man from Wounded Knee, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for aggravated sexual abuse of a minor. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on August 18, 2025.
Anfernee Rondeau, 28, will also serve five years of supervised release after his prison term and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Rondeau was indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2024 and found guilty following a trial in May 2025.
According to evidence presented at trial, the incident occurred on April 4, 2024. Rondeau, his girlfriend, and her six-year-old daughter returned home after drinking. Both adults were intoxicated when they entered a bedroom with the child. A short time later, a 13-year-old heard the child crying and discovered Rondeau on top of her with his pants partially unzipped and pulled down while the child's pants and underwear were also pulled down. The witness intervened by pushing Rondeau off the child and then took the child to another family member for safety.
Law enforcement from the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and arrested Rondeau.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell explained: "This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court."
The case was investigated by both the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen led the prosecution.
Rondeau was immediately remanded into custody following sentencing.
