Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) considers Democrats’ COVID-19 relief bill non-specific and a waste of money.
Rounds and nine other Republicans discussed their competing relief bills with President Biden at the White House on Monday.
“They really wanted to spend a lot of money on additional unemployment benefits for people that literally could, like in South Dakota, by the time you’re all done, you could be making close to $90,000 a year in unemployment benefits. That’s not appropriate and it doesn’t get people back to work,” Rounds said on “Fox & Friends,” The Epoch Times reported.
The senator made his remarks on Tuesday following the meeting
“I came away thinking there’s hope to try to find something in the future, but it’s not going to be easy,” Rounds said. “Clearly there’s folks out there that would love to spend a huge amount of money, as long as it doesn’t come out of their paycheck, it comes as borrowed money for the next generation, they’re not afraid to spend it.”
In a joint statement, both parties acknowledged that though nothing was agreed to during the meeting, they are happy with their first official meeting with Biden in the Oval Office.
