A man from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence on November 25, 2024.
Mason Neck, aged 35, received a sentence of one year and one day in federal prison. This will be followed by five years of supervised release. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Neck was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2024 and pleaded guilty on August 28, 2024. His conviction for Abusive Sexual Contact in 2019 required him to register as a sex offender and update his registration within three business days if he relocated or changed employment.
In September 2023, while under supervised release in Rapid City, Neck complied with registration requirements. However, after moving from his registered address in April 2024 without updating his registration information, he was arrested on May 8, 2024.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program involves collaboration among federal, state, and local resources to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
The U.S. Marshals Service investigated the case with Senior Litigation Counsel Kirk Albertson prosecuting it. Following his sentencing, Neck was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
