A federal jury in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has found Lamont Victor Garrett guilty of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. The verdict was delivered on June 11, 2025, following a three-day trial.
Garrett, aged 52 and residing in Sioux Falls, was charged with the offense after law enforcement discovered a black Sig Sauer magazine containing 9mm ammunition and .22 caliber ammunition in his bedroom during an August 21, 2024 search. As a felon, Garrett is legally barred from possessing firearms and ammunition.
The conviction carries potential penalties including up to 15 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, up to three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment for the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell confirmed Garrett's indictment by a federal grand jury in November 2024. The case was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson and investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department Violent Crimes Unit alongside Homeland Security Investigations.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites various levels of law enforcement with community partners to combat violent crime and gun violence. PSN emphasizes fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
Following the conviction, Garrett was placed into custody with the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing. A presentence investigation has been ordered and a sentencing date will be scheduled.
